The Graduate Certificatein Integrated Human Studies is an intedisciplinary program that provides: Essential knowledge about the changing environmental, social, economic, technical and political context of the 21st Century. Skills needed to respond to current and complex local, regional and global challenges. A framework to position students for an active and engaging career and: to make a positive contribution to their communities, institutions and corporations well into the future.
The Diploma will be available in 2010 in a blended learning mode at UWA or an equivalent fully online distance learning mode.
The Certificate is structured as a 24-point course, comprising the first four units of the Graduate Diploma of Integrated Human Studies. It can be completed full time over one semester or over one or more years part tiime. Students can exit after successfully completing the first four units with the award of Certificate in Integrated Human Studies or continue on to complete a Graduate Diploma in Integrated Human Studies or a Master of Integrated Human Studies.
A brief outline of the planned units follows. Generally students include IHST8801, Orientation to Integrated Human Studies, at the beginning of their course.
IHST 8801 Orientation to Integrated Human Studies
This unit introduces an interdisciplinary approach to global challenges (such as the population explosion, global warming and malnutrition) and the human predicament in the 21st century. Focusing on wellbeing and sustainability, the unit briefly surveys human origins, biology, culture, and behaviour and explores scenarios for the future and possibilities for human action. The unit introduces students to online research and collaborative learning skills.
IHST 8802 Emergence of 21st Century Humanity
This unit outlines human origins from an evolutionary and historical perspective. It examines human natures and cultures, and human interactions with the environment before investigating the great transitions in human history and the impact of technology on culture and the environment and human wellbeing. Finally, the unit considers the nature of further transitions possible this century. The unit introduces students to online research and collaborative learning skills.
IHST 8809 Dimensions of the Human Experience
What does it mean to be human in the 21st century? This unit investigates the complexity of the human condition and human diversity from an individual and social perspective. It examines the importance of environmental and cultural influences on individual, group and national development and the impact of individual and group needs and desires on human and global realities. The unit develops online research and collaborative learning skills.
IHST 8810 Technologies, Economies and Ecologies of the 21st Century
The 21st century will be one of massive transition. This unit explores the forces and impacts of globalisation and some of the major drivers of change and their likely impact on human lifestyles and the environment. It investigates the impacts of emerging technologies on human wellbeing and global sustainability, as well as economic paradigms and their potential impacts on nature and society. Finally, it considers likely changes in natural, social and built environments. The unit develops online research and collaborative learning skills.
