About the Centre (More information is available from our Prospectus 2009-10 (pdf file) or UWA CIHS website)
The University of Western Australia established the Centre for Integrated Human Studies (CIHS) in 2008 in response to the need to develop transdisciplinary studies directly relevant to human wellbeing, world futures and the challenges and opportunities of the 21st Century. Mission statement The Centre's overarching concern is the enhancement of human wellbeing in a sustainable environment. Human decisions and actions over the next fifty years could decide the fate of the world for generations. University-educated people play a critical role in shaping world futures and universities are well placed to help them to make a positive impact. Therefore, education, lifelong learning and the promotion of global citizenship is fundamental to the CIHS mission. PhilosophyThe Centre's philosophy is based on the knowledge that human beings face large complex challenges this century, and that transdisciplinary knowledge and skills will be needed to respond to these challenges. ActivitiesThe core functions of the CIHS are education, research, and community activities. It is currently developing future-focused education programs as part of its Education for World Futures (EWF) initiative. Current research is investigating the concerns, understandings and commitments of tertiary students. Through its public seminars, the centre also promotes lifelong learning and global citizenship in the local community. |
